M95, M96, SN2012aw

Supernova SN2012aw in M95 was discovered on 2012 March 16th. The white lines mark its position on this photo. M95 is about 38 million light years away. So the supernova really erupted that long ago and its light has just reached us. It completely outshines its host galaxy; no other individual stars are discernable at such a distance.
